Hanjin Shipping Skipping Port of Portland

by Staff
Statesman Journal, June 21, 2012

(Ross William Hamilton) Terminal 6, usually stacked full of containers, has relatively few boxes waiting for shipping abroad, as steamship lines bypass Portland because of labor disputes. PORTLAND -- Hanjin Shipping has alerted customers its vessels will avoid the Port of Portland until operations return to normal.

A dispute over which union workers should plug-in and unplug refrigerated shipping containers has ignited a slowdown at the port.

Hanjin Shipping says containers bound for Portland will be dropped in Seattle instead. It's the second company to bypass Portland because of the dispute.

Meanwhile, a federal judge Friday will conduct two hearings on the matter.

In one, the National Labor Relations Board will seek a temporary restraining order to halt the slowdown. In the other, the judge will hear from the International Longshore and Warehouse Union, which wants a temporary restraining order and injunction forcing terminal operator ICTSI Oregon to give them the disputed jobs currently held by electrical workers.
