HANFORD, Calif. -- A dairy farm in the South Valley is celebrating a major solar project. Several people gathered to dedicate the one megawatt solar energy farm in Hanford on Monday, including Rep. David Valadao, R-Hanford.

Medeiros & Son Dairy had the CalCom solar system installed to become more sustainable. It includes tracking technology and will produce enough energy to power 500 homes.

Brian Medeiros says it will save him money in the long run by powering the fans and sprinklers that keep his cows cool and productive. He said, "So that's what we're really excited about. We can start offsetting that huge cost and make sure we can continue to have happy California cows."

"This is something that helps everybody, from the consumer to the taxpayer to those who are out looking for work," said Valadao.

The Medeiros family also fallowed 60 percent of its 1,400 acres to save water during the drought.
