Hastings to Fight McDermott
Snake River Dam Bill

by Associated Press
KPVI, August 4, 2009

KENNEWICK, Wash. - Congressman Doc Hastings says he'll fight a bill introduced by Jim McDermott that could lead to the removal of the four lower Snake River dams.

Hastings says breaching the dams is an extreme action that would cost thousands of jobs and increase greenhouse gas emissions.

The central Washington representative is the top Republican on the House Natural Resources Committee.

The bill introduced Friday by Seattle Democrat McDermott and others deals with salmon restoration and calls for federal agencies to study the environmental, infrastructure and economic issues associated with removing the dams.

Twenty co-sponsors include Oregon's Earl Blumenauer. He says his support does not mean he necessarily supports dam removal.
