House Adopts Shoreline Amendment on Docks

by Staff
The News Tribune, July 15, 2011

Washington Rep. Doc Hastings An amendment to prevent federal funds from being spent on a controversial shoreline management plan in the Tri-Cities was passed Thursday by the U.S. House of Representatives.

Rep. Doc Hastings, R-Wash., introduced the amendment to restrict the Army Corps of Engineers from moving forward with a proposal to include new mandates for dock requirements along the Columbia and Snake rivers.

The new proposed mandates include specific requirements for the length, width, color and transparency of each dock, which the National Marine Fisheries Services said would help save salmon.

Hastings, however, said salmon runs are at near-record levels in the McNary area with the current docks in place.

The amendment was part of the Fiscal Year 2012 Energy and Water Appropriations bill, which is expected to pass the House today.
