We Can Have Both

by Jeffrey G. Nesset
The Idaho Statesman, June 5, 2005

I appreciate the opportunity to give you my personal opinion on Judge Redden's decision which may impact the discussion of dam removal on the Snake River system. While this is my opinion, I believe it is representative of many who live in and around Lewiston, Clarkston and the Lewis Clark Valley.

We are very concerned about the possibility of dam removal and its effect on our economy and way of life. Many families have built their lives working in services supported by our current river system. A study by the University of Idaho indicates millions of dollars and thousands of jobs are directly or indirectly impacted by the current river system. Which of you in your communities would not be concerned if someone or something wanted to drastically change or take away that which has become an important part of your life?

While we are very concerned about the economy and the jobs our current river system provides, let me also say that we are for fish, we are concerned about air quality, we support highway safety, value fuel conservation, and support a clean environment. We have and will continue to support "fish and dams." We can have both.
