Columbia Ports Offer to Purchase Howard Island

by Associated Press
KTVZ, October 5, 2008

KALAMA, Wash. - Columbia River ports have made an offer to buy an island to help compensate for ecological damage caused by dredging to deepen the river's ship channel.

The 168-acre Howard Island is owned by a Portland resident and projected to cost $850,000. Port of Kalama spokeswoman Mindi Linquist says the island has some natural vegetation but otherwise isn't used for anything.

It's is in the Columbia near the point where the Cowlitz River flows into it. It is also near Cottonwood Island, which is already owned by Columbia River ports.

The $150 million channel-deepening project is designed to give larger oceangoing vessels access to Portland and other ports, helping them compete for Pacific Rim business.
