(Philip A. Dwyer) Worker Kevin Daniels works on a recently started aluminum smelter pot on potline B at the Alcoa Intalco aluminum smelter west of Ferndale, Tuesday afternoon, Feb. 15, 2011. Intalco has also hired 60 more people. FERNDALE, Wash. -- Alcoa's Intalco Works aluminum smelter in Ferndale is one step closer to securing a long-term power contract.

Alcoa announced yesterday that it has reached a tentative agreement on a 10-year deal with the Bonneville Power Administration.

Josh Wilund with Intalco Works says the smelter makes more than just aluminum...

He says Intalco works produces about $118 million of personal income in Whatcom County, as well as $5 million in local taxes and about $240,000 in gifts to charity each year.

The contract is expected to be finalized by early December, and would run through September 2022.

The Bonneville Power Administration is taking public comments on the new contract at www.bpa.com.
