Judge's Salmon-Plan Ruling: 'Predictable'

by Thomas O'Keefe
Seattle Times, August 25, 2011

Time for broader actions

In her guest column on Aug. 19 responding to the Judge James Redden's decision on the federal Northwest salmon plan, Terry Flores states that "what we really need is less process and more action" ["A predictable overreaction to judge's salmon-plan ruling," Opinion].

I agree.

What we need is less process producing illegal recovery plans and more focus on bringing all stakeholders to the table for a meaningful discussion of actions that will lead to recovery.

It's hardly news that those who benefit from the status quo support business as usual. It's time for an honest discussion of a broader suite of actions necessary for salmon recovery.

This discussion will only happen if true political leadership emerges on this issue. The time is now.
