Salmon Killed by Disinfectant Spill at Hatchery by Associated Press KTVB News, July 1, 2004

LEWISTON -- More than 100 adult chinook salmon were killed at Dworshak National Fish Hatchery when disinfectant found its way into a holding pond.

The disinfectant is normally used to clean empty ponds.

Manager Bill Miller says it killed 135 fish that had recently climbed a fish ladder and entered the hatchery.

Miller says that despite the loss, the hatchery should have no trouble meeting spawning goals.

Up to two-thousand adult fish are expected to return to the hatchery, and 12-hundred are needed to spawn the next generation of hatchery chinook.

Miller is not sure what caused the chlorine to end up in the holding pond Tuesday, but says the matter is under investigation.
