Fish and Game Proposes License for Retail, Wholesale Salmon Buyers by Associated Press KTVB, January 19, 2005

BOISE -- Restaurants and others that sell hatchery Chinook salmon bought from Indian tribes may be forced to buy a license in the future.

That's because the state Fish and Game is trying to boost regulation of fish sales.

Agency director Steve Huffaker says changes are needed to make sure fish traders comply with health regulations and federal Endangered Species Act requirements.

Right now, there's a law requiring a license for steelhead trout bought from Indians and then resold. But the law is silent on Chinook salmon.

A wholesale Chinook buyer's license would cost $150 and a retail license would cost $30, according to the proposal.

It would generate about one thousand dollars for the state annually.
