Light Retrofit Saves 'The Equivalent of Building a Gas Plant' by Staff KVAL, June 16, 2011

SPRINGFIELD, Ore. - The lights at the True Value Distribution Center burned enough energy to power hundreds of homes.

Not anymore.

Replacing the 1,800 light fixtures will save money, improve lighting - and make that energy from the Bonneville Power Administration available to other customers.

"It's the equivalent of building a gas plant, a coal plant, a hydro facility - whatever type source of energy you want to talk about," said BPA's Doug Johnson, "but you do it through saving energy."

The project is the largest commercial energy efficiency project to date for the Springfield Utility Board.

"This way we can save half our power and let somebody else use our power that we don't use," said Roger Hansen, operations manager at the facility. "It's a win win project."
