Little Salmon River rescue plan sent for Legislature's review

by News Service
Seattle Post-Intelligencer - November 15(?)

The Idaho Water Resources Board has approved a comprehensive basin plan for the Little Salmon River and its tributaries.

It will now be forwarded to the Idaho Legislature for approval in the 2002 legislative session. The plan designates some 67 miles of streams and rivers as recreational and protects them from construction of dams, placer and dredge mining, including recreational mining, and sand and gravel extraction. The designation is meant to protect recreational activities such as salmon and steelhead fishing, according to Hal Anderson, planning administrator for the Idaho Department of Water Resources at Boise.

"The designation was mainly because the river and creeks are in a reasonably pristine condition," he said.

The protected segments include the Little Salmon River from the U.S. Highway 95 bridge above the falls to its confluence with the Salmon River, Boulder Creek from its headwaters to its mouth, Hard Creek from its headwaters to its confluence with Hazard Creek and Hazard Creek from the outlet at Hazard Lake to its mouth.

The plan has been developed over the past three years. If approved by legislators, it will become the blueprint for management of water resources in the basin.
