LNG Terminal Encounters a Fishy Problem by Staff Tank Storage Magazine, January 6, 2010

The proposed Bradwood Landing liquefied natural gas terminal (LNG) in Oregon, US, is awaiting analysis from National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) into whether the terminal will be a threat to endangered species.

Houston-based NorthernStar Natural Gas, which backs the terminal, wants to build a terminal and storage facility which would offload super-cooled LNG from tankers, reheat it to a gas and ship it to market or storage facilities around the west through a pipeline.

Environmental voices say it would disturb the most important salmon nurseries on the lower Columbia, with devastating impacts from dredging, ballast water intake and the turbidity from operation of the terminal. NorthernStar Natural Gas assures it will provide adequate mitigation measures to make any impact negligible.

NMFS will complete its analysis by 8 March. Should it get the all-clear Bradwood will be on track to complete its permitting by Q3, allowing construction to begin later in 2010.
