ON Line Project Nets First
DOE Loan Guarantee for Transmission

by Staff
Renew Grid, February 16, 2011

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has finalized a $343 million loan guarantee backing the One Nevada Transmission Line (ON Line) project, representing the DOE's first loan guarantee for a transmission upgrade.

The project, which is jointly owned by Great Basin Transmission South LLC and NV Energy, includes a new 500 kV AC transmission line that will carry approximately 600 MW of electricity from northern Nevada to load centers to the south. It will run 235 miles from Ely, Nev., to just north of Las Vegas. Also, a new substation will be built at the northern end of the line.

The DOE notes that the ON Line project represents the first phase of the Southwest Intertie Project, which is aimed at facilitating the transmission of 2 GW of electricity - particularly wind and solar power from Wyoming, Idaho and Nevada - to the Southwest and California.
