The Dalles Dam Lock Reopens
to Columbia River Traffic

by Staff
The Oregonian, October 12, 2009

(Randy L. Rasmussen/The Oregonian) River traffic was impeded on the Columbia River at The Dalles Dam

The navigation lock at The Dalles Dam reopened at 3 p.m. today, letting barges and other Columbia River traffic through for the first time since Sept. 29.

The lock had been shut down so crews could weld cracks in the lock's gate. The gate will still need more repairs, said Diana Fredlund, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, which owns and operates the eight dams along the river. But the current fixes are sufficient until the corps can install more permanent repairs, which are scheduled for December 2010.

Barges loaded with wheat, fuel and other cargo have been stranded by the closed gate.
