Columbia Shipping to Close for River Lock Repairs by Associated Press Seattle Times, November 30, 2010

PORTLAND, Ore. -- The Columbia River is about to close for shipping for more than three months so the Army Corps of Engineers can replace navigation lock gates at three dams.

The Daily Journal of Commerce reports the existing gates range from 39 to 53 years old, are worn out and have shown multiple signs of fatigue-related stress.

More than $50 million of federal stimulus money will pay for the replacement work, which the Corps of Engineers says is needed to keep navigation open and ensure safety.

The three dams are the John Day and The Dalles on the Columbia, and Lower Monumental on the Snake River.

Products generally shipped on the river during that time period will have to be transported by truck or train.
