Longshoremen Boost Production at the
Port of Portland, Servicing the Hanjin Madrid

by Richard Read
The Oregonian, June 23, 2012

(Ross William Hamilton) Terminal 6, usually stacked full of containers, has relatively few boxes waiting for shipping abroad, as steamship lines bypass Portland because of labor disputes. Longshoremen picked up the pace Saturday at the Port of Portland, loading and unloading a container vessel at almost normal speed, a Port spokesman said.

Two gangs, or work groups, of longshoreman were working in Terminal 6, where a three-week standoff between the longshore union and an electricians' union and other problems have backed up freight across the Northwest and beyond. The Hanjin Madrid, a 51,000-ton vessel, was in port as scheduled.

"It looks like productivity was headed toward average today," said Josh Thomas, the Port spokesman. He said two forklift-like reach stackers were repaired and one crane remained out of commission.
