Mason PUD Would Be Hit
by Bonneville Rate Hike

by Staff
Kitsap Sun, February 11, 2009

Belfair - Bonneville Power Administration is proposing a rate increase that would average between 7 and 8 percent for most customers of public utility districts, including Mason County Public Utility District No. 3, officials say.

The rate increase, scheduled to take effect in October, is subject to public review and could be adjusted, said Steve Wright, BPA administrator.

The increase is driven by upgrades to BPA's nuclear facilities, projects to improve salmon survival, declining sales of surplus power outside the region, and higher maintenance costs for the hydropower system.

Not included in the rate calculation are paybacks to public utilities for past over-charges, as determined by court order.
