Two More Days of Salmon Fishing
Added Upriver from Bonneville Dam

by Bill Monroe
The Oregonian, May 9, 2019

A spring chinook salmon in hand of happy fisherman. Oregon and Washington met by telephone Wednesday and approved two more days of salmon fishing upriver from Bonneville Dam, but declined to approve any more fishing in the lower Columbia River.

Fishing will be allowed Saturday and Sunday in boats from tower power lines about six miles below The Dalles Dam upriver to the Oregon/Washington border. Bank angling will be allowed between Bonneville and the power lines.

All eyes are on lower numbers than expected at the dam, which may be a result of high, turbid water, or a mis-calculation of the run prediction. Only 25,073 had crossed the Bonneville ladders by Tuesday, well-behind normal numbers.

Managers said they’ll watch Bonneville counts over the next week and hope to assess the run’s accuracy and strength by May 20.
