Hanjin Port of Portland Pull-out Means More Truck Traffic by Kimberly Eiten KPTV, June 19, 2015

PORTLAND, OR -- Earlier this year, Port of Portland's biggest customer, Hanjin Shipping, pulled out of terminal 6, and researchers think this is now affecting traffic.

Before leaving, Hanjin Shipping handled 80 percent of the carrier containers at the Port of Portland.

Port of Portland researchers said trucks are now doing much of the shipping previously done by boat. They estimated that about 2,000 more semi--trucks drive on Portland roads every day.

The trucks make up only a small percentage of traffic, but create more congestion because each truck is equivalent to multiple cars.

"We have lost our carrier service, most recently with Hanjin and Hapag--Lloyd at Terminal 6," Port of Portland representative Susie Lahsene said. "[It] has resulted with a lot more trucks on the road system.

She said the solution for drivers and shipping is to increase transportation funding, which is up to lawmakers.
