No Agreement on Spring Chinook Allocation by Staff Seattle Times, December 15, 2008

ASTORIA, Ore. - Oregon and Washington fish and wildlife commissions can't agree on how to allocate the catch from the spring Columbia River chinook salmon run.

Last week the Oregon commission voted to allow commercial fisheries more than recommended by a working group.

The Washington commission delayed its vote.

Nearly 300,000 spring chinook are expected to return to the Columbia River in 2009, the third-highest return on record. The two commissions decide how much sport and commercial fisheries get.

The working group recommended 65 percent for the sport fishery, 35 percent for commercial. The Oregon board agreed on a 55-45 split and gave the department director authority to negotiate within 5 percentage points of that allocation.
