Chinook salmon fishing closes tonight at the mouth of the Columbia River, between Buoy 10, on the bar, and Tongue Point.

Fishing for fin-clipped coho remains open in the same area, and fishing for chinook (no fin-clip requirement, but a one-fish limit) remains open east of Tongue Point until Sept. 11.

Fishery managers in Washington and Oregon met by telephone Monday, expecting to extend the season. But less than an hour before the meeting, biologists in both states said too many lower-river hatchery chinook have been caught to allow the extension.

More information is expected before another meeting Sept. 9 to set commercial gill-net seasons. It's possible, if somewhat unlikely, sport anglers will get to fish longer from Tongue Point to the mouth of the Lewis River.

Meanwhile, offshore chinook catches and counts at Bonneville Dam continue to lag preseason predictions.

Biologists said, however, it's still too early to accurately assess the strength of the Columbia River's fall chinook run.
