Corps Begins 'On-Request' Lockage Service

WALLA WALLA - Navigation officials are changing the recreational vessel lockage schedule at Columbia and Snake River dams on Saturday.

Beginning Sunday, recreational vessel lockage requests can be made only during daylight hours at Walla Walla District's navigation locks on the Columbia and lower Snake rivers, reported the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

Dams involved are McNary Dam, at Columbia River Mile 292; Ice Harbor Dam, Snake River Mile 9.7; Lower Monumental Dam, Snake River Mile 41.6 and Little Goose Dam, Snake River Mile 70.3.

The "on-request" lockages will continue through May 14, 2008.

Commercial vessels continue to have lockage precedence over recreational vessels. Recreational vessels may be allowed to lock through with commercial vessels at the discretion of the lock operator.

The navigational lock at Little Goose Dam has developed a mechanical problem, making it necessary to restrict lockage to commercial river traffic only until machinery can be repaired, corps officials reported. Recreational craft operators will be unable to use the Little Goose lock until further notice.
