Chinook Fishing Opens April 23 on Upper Snake River by Staff Statesman Journal, April 15, 2011

ENTERPRISE - Fishing for Chinook salmon opens April 23 on the Snake River between the Dug Bar Boat Ramp and the deadline downstream from Hells Canyon Dam.

Biologists on both the Oregon and Idaho sides of the river are forecasting that there will be more than enough Chinook for hatchery needs, and are opening the season to allow anglers to catch the surplus.

"While this year's run may not be as large as last year's, if the river flows cooperate there will be excellent salmon fishing opportunities again in Hell's Canyon this year," said Jeff Yanke, the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife district fish biologist in Enterprise.

Fishing will be open seven days a week with a daily bag limit of four adipose fin-clipped spring Chinook salmon a day (a combination of jacks and adults), no more than two of which can be adult salmon longer than 24 inches.

Anglers must stop fishing for salmon for the day when they have kept four salmon or two adult salmon, whichever comes first. Only barbless hooks may be used.
