Otter View Wrong

by Doug Armentrout
The Idaho Statesman, September 28, 2003

Three sockeye salmon. That´s all that returned to Redfish Lake this year. It´s obvious that things aren´t working with regard to salmon recovery.

Yet, in the Sept. 15 edition of The Idaho Statesman, Butch Otter has the nerve to say that because the job situation is bad in Idaho that the “fish are doing better than the people.”

Mr. Otter is wrong. I´m one of those people who have lost their jobs.

But last time I looked, I´m not on the verge of extinction. And even though I am concerned about finding work and returning to the job market, I still care about salmon and steelhead, and support the efforts of the environmental groups that Otter labels “extortionists.”

Sometimes one needs to set aside self-serving points of view and look at the bigger picture.
