Choose Facts Over Myth
and Remove Snake Dams

by Amy Souers Kober

The dam supporters should do the math ("To aid salmon, judge may order dams to spill more," Friday.) We can remove the four lower Snake dams and replace all of their benefits, while restoring healthy, fishable salmon runs for less than the Bush administration was planning on spending to keep the dams in place.

If we can keep every farmer whole, if we can ensure reliable grain transportation and energy -- all while restoring the most magnificent runs of salmon on the face of this Earth -- who wouldn't support that?

Let's bust the myth once and for all. These four lower Snake dams are different. They don't produce near the benefits as other dams on the Columbia. Yet their impact on salmon is devastatingly more severe.

Are we going to let our decisions be driven by myth or fact? Where are the elected leaders in the Northwest who will stand up and admit that removing these outdated dams would be cheaper for the region in the long run, and that targeted investments and salmon restoration would benefit our families, communities and economies for generations to come?
