Obama Plan Means Yet More Delays

by Joan G. Harris
The News Tribune, October 5, 2009

(Jackie Johnston, 7/1/99) Ice Harbor Dam on the Snake River near Burbank, Wash. Unfortunately, the Obama administration salmon plan for the Columbia River, like the two attempts before it, appears to fall far short of real recovery for salmon and steelhead. It once again calls for more delay and study instead of real and meaningful actions in the near-term.

Should we be satisfied with salmon populations on permanent life support, or should we recover healthy salmon runs that support our economy and fishing communities?

The removal of the four lower Snake River dams should not be something we consider in the future when salmon are significantly scarcer than they are now. It should be at the front and center of any honest, science-based approach to recovery.

Throwing money at more politically realistic habitat projects might have some modest benefits, but it will not lead to healthy, self-sustaining salmon populations. It will continue the failed status quo of spending lots of taxpayer and ratepayer money on actions that won't ever lead us to real salmon recovery.
