Container volume at the Port of Portland increased 2 percent in October but not enough to offset an overall slide of nearly 6 percent in the January-October period.

In October the Columbia River port handled 446 more containers than in October 2007, bringing the monthly total to 21,458 TEUs. Through October, container volume declined 5.8 percent to 208,293 TEUs.

The same pattern held for the port's export containers -- up nearly 12 percent to 13,230 TEUs in October, down almost 8 percent to 117,179 TEUs in January-October.

Import boxes fell 10.5 percent to 8,219 TEUs in October and 3 percent to 91,114 TEUs year-to-date.

In other October categories, breakbulk cargo fell 3.6 percent to 883,773 tons; grain gained 6.1 percent to 3.8 million tons; mineral shipments increased 5.3 percent to 4.8 million tons, and autos decreased 6.5 percent to 347,835 units.
