PGE, BPA Initiate Collaboration on
Electric Transmission Infrastructure

Portland General Electric (PGE) has entered into a memorandum of understanding with the Bonneville Power Administration (BPA) to coordinate the planning of new electrical substations and transmission facilities, as well as to consider joint development of these assets.

The agreement allows PGE and BPA to share confidential information as they work together on issues such as system interconnections, substation locations and the utilization of existing transmission corridors, the companies say.

In terms of projects in the pipelines, PGE has proposed Cascade Crossing, a double-circuit transmission line that would run from Boardman to Salem, Ore. BPA is currently building the McNary-John Day transmission line, which will be completed in January 2012, and it is conducting environmental analyses on three proposed 500 kV transmission lines. In addition, BPA is developing several large electrical substations to integrate wind generation into the grid.

"We look forward to engaging in discussions with BPA to help ensure that Cascade Crossing, if constructed, would integrate with other existing and proposed transmission projects," says Steve Hawke, PGE's senior vice president of customer service, transmission and distribution.
