by Bill DiBenedetto
Journal of Commerce, October 16, 2008

The Port of Portland, Ore., posted a strong September as container volume increased 9.6 percent over the previous-year period, but not enough to put much of a dent in the port's nine-month total, which declined 6.6 percent to 186,835 TEUs.

Imports moving through the Columbia River port decreased 2.1 percent through September to 82,895 TEUs, and export volume fell 9.9 percent to 103,940 TEUs.

In other results through September, grain shipments gained 10.2 percent to 3.38 million tons, and mineral bulk volume was up 8.1 percent to 4.34 million tons.

Breakbulk tonnage over the same period declined 8.6 percent to 740,733 tons and auto traffic through Terminal 6 fell 2.8 percent to 321,172 units.
