Port Expands Freight Rail Capacity

by Staff
Portland Business Journal, June 22, 2009

The Port of Portland broke ground Monday on the $14 million Ramsey Rail Yard project to increase freight rail capacity and help to decrease rail system congestion in Rivergate Industrial District and on the regional rail system.

The project will add a 13,000-foot lead track and four other tracks to the industrial district, which currently has just a single track.

The project is funded by $6.8 million in state ConnectOregon grants and loans and $4.3 million federal transportation dollars. The project also will include an investment from the track's main users, Burlington Northern Santa Fe and Union Pacific, which will repay $2.8 million to the Port over 10 years.

While touting that the project will generate new jobs, port officials did not reveal the number expected.

The project is expected to be completed by May.
