Pacific Northwest Ports Post Mixed Results For 2008 by Staff The Cunningham Report, January 25, 2009

Although containerized trade through the Pacific Northwest ports dropped during 2008, some ports were much less affected by the recession than others. The Port of Tacoma made it through 2008 with the lowest decline of any West Coast port, while the Port of Seattle recorded the largest decrease of any port in the West.

In Tacoma, overall containerized trade dipped by just 3.3 percent during 2008. Last year, Tacoma handled 1,861,358 TEUs compared with 1,924,929 handled in 2007.

At the Port of Seattle, container counts dropped by 13.6 percent, with the port recording 1,704,492 TEUs in 2008 compared to 1,973,504 in 2007.

The Port of Portland experienced a more modest 6.4 percent dip in container counts last year, with year-to-year counts dropping from 262,246 TEUs in 2007 to 245,459 in 2008.

None of the Pacific Northwest ports project increases in trade in 2009.
