The Race for the First
Congressional District is Heating Up

BOISE - Walt Minnick and Bill Sali are vying for one seat, but they're split on the issues.

Minnick says he wants affordable insurance for everyone.

"Insurance only works if everyone is in the system. That's not big government solution that's individual solution," said Minnick.

Sali wants to cut the numbers of uninsured, but says the issue is exaggerated.

"The problems not as big as some of the numbers that we see, it's an overestimation and when we go to take care of those folks the cost will be less," said Sali.

The two candidates are also sparing on breaching the Snake River dams to help the salmon.

"I know we can save the dams and save the salmon. We are doing both today. We have record numbers of steelhead and salmon in the Hells Canyon this year," said Sali.

Sali says Minnick backed tearing down the dams. Sali points to a quote Minnick gave the Associated Press five years ago. Minnick says the quote was taken out of context.

"I do not know what the solution is, but I do know this is an issue that our congressmen should be dealing with, so we don't have Idaho's water and Idaho's fish sacrificed," said Minnick.

Both candidates agree the campaign season is competitive and voters will have the final say on election day.
