POMEROY - Capturing the power of wind and turning it into energy, was the focus, as over 300 community members and school age kids from the Pomeroy area attended a kickoff event held by Puget Sound Energy at the Garfield County Fairgrounds Thursday.

"Today we are celebrating our groundbreaking of phase one of the Lower Snake River Wind Facility," said Puget Sound Energy President Kimberly Harris. "It's a fantastic day and a great celebration with the community."

Harris said Garfield county has been very welcoming to the company and they are excited that the Lower Snake River Wind project is now in full swing.

"We've started the road construction so there is construction going on and we will start erection of the wind turbines in spring 2011," said Harris.

Harris said they expect the wind turbines to start generating electricity by spring 2012.

"It's green energy, it's renewable to harness the impact of the wind, not only from the lack of emissions or the lack of CO2 and the green renewable aspects, also it's a free fuel source," said Harris. "When the wind blows, we are not paying for natural gas, we are not paying for coal, it is free energy that we are capturing and turning into electricity."
