Administration Undermines
Salmon Recovery - Again

by Alex Uber
The News Tribune, December 19, 2004

Jeff Morton (Perspectives, 12-12) is correct in his assessment of the latest Bush administration plan for salmon recovery on the Columbia and Snake rivers.

This latest proposal to essentially write off the damage the dams have done to salmon on the rivers fits well with earlier proposals to ignore the differences between hatchery and wild salmon and to drastically cut back on critical habitat protections required by the Endangered Species Act.

How many times do we have to watch the Bush administration fall over itself trying to undermine salmon recovery in the Pacific Northwest, only to see its proposals wilt under the scrutiny of legal and scientific review and yes, economic scrutiny?

It is time for congressional leaders like Rep. Adam Smith to step in and support our economy by supporting real salmon recovery. The Salmon Planning Act is a step in the right direction.
