Salmon Recovery: The Reckoning

by John Prescott
The Oregonian, February 20, 2011

A recent column about the region's salmon plan ("The reckoning," Feb.13) might make for a good novel, but it would have to be characterized as fiction.

The federal salmon plan before Judge Redden is based on the best available science, and the Obama administration agrees. Already there is evidence the plan is working. It is a fact that record-setting salmon and steelhead runs have returned to the Columbia and Snake rivers.

People throughout the Northwest, including our rural electric cooperative members, benefit from healthy salmon runs and clean and renewable hydroelectric power.

Judge Redden has a tremendous opportunity to support salmon recovery efforts by listening to the top scientists and allowing the implementation of actions that will benefit the salmon. The plan in front of Judge Redden allows us to direct our collective resources and will towards salmon recovery measures that are underway and working.
