Twice as many fish as last year will be released at five locations on the river.

Chinook Salmon in the hands of Idaho Fish and Game. BOISE, Idaho -- Get reel-ly excited anglers! Idaho Fish and Game (IDFG) announced that Idaho's famous steelhead will be released into the Boise River on Nov. 17.

Last year, IDFG stocked the river with 125. This year, 250 will be released! IDFG stocking trucks will release roughly 250 steelhead at the following locations:

The fish are trapped at Hells Canyon Dam on the Snake River and will be equally distributed at the five locations.

Anglers are limited to two Boise River steelhead per day, six in possession and 20 total for the fall season, said IDFG. Though barbless hooks are required in other steelhead waters, they are not required for Boise River steelhead angling.

Anglers will need a valid fishing license, and those looking to fish for one of the hatchery steelhead will need a steelhead permit. The permits can be purchased at any IDFG office and various other vendors across the state. Any steelhead caught by someone without a permit must immediately return the fish to water. IDFG states it is illegal to target steelhead without the permit.

Fish and Game said all steelhead stocked in the Boise River will lack an adipose fin, which is a small fin normally found behind the dorsal fin. Boise River anglers catching a rainbow trout that is longer than 20 inches, which also lacks an adipose fin, should consider the fish a steelhead.

For more information regarding the Boise River steelhead release, contact the Fish and Game Southwest Regional Office in Nampa by calling (208) 465-8465. Check the department's website to learn more.
