Remove Dams Focus

by WWC Staff
Wheat Life, November 2004

A letter was sent recently to Congress from hundreds of businesses in 35 states advocating congressional support for the Salmon Planning Act (H.R. 1097), as reported in The Columbia Basin Bulletin. The Act proposes to launch economic studies to weigh the costs and benefits of dam removal on the Northwest economy and gives the Corps of Engineers authority to modify or remove Snake River dams if necessary to restore salmon runs.

Representative Jim McDermott of Washington introduced the Salmon Planning Act in 2003. While the list of House supporters is substantial and growing, there are no other lawmakers from the Pacific Northwest who have signed in support of the Salmon Planning Act, other than McDermott, according to the Bulletin.
