Remove Dams for Salmon

by Amanda Preacher
The Oregonian, April 11, 2009

The science is clear -- removing the four lower Snake River dams is the best, if not only option, to recover Snake River salmon and steelhead.

For decades, politics have trumped science triggering a salmon crisis on the Columbia and Snake Rivers and crippling coastal and river communities. Thank you to Cecil Andrus for calling on President Obama to step into the fray ("Obama must lead stakeholders toward a fair system," April 5).

It's time to leave the legal deadlock and federal failure behind and move on with a new, win-win solution to recover the Northwest's signature fish. It is time to restore science in federal decision-making. Ignoring the science has wasted billions of taxpayer dollars and pushed wild salmon to the brink.

We can remove the four lower Snake River dams and replace their limited benefits with alternatives in energy and transportation. We can have a win-win solution on the Columbia and Snake Rivers -- we just have to act.
