Table: Typical Wheat Shipping Rates by Survey Respondents Efforts are underway to protect dams along the lower Snake River.

Lawmakers, including Washington state Congressman Dan Newhouse, introduced the Northwest Energy Security Act, in hopes to preserve barge deliveries of U.S. wheat to elevators in the Pacific Northwest.

Senator Jim Risch from Idaho calls plans to remove dams "unnecessary and unwarranted." Barge traffic along the Snake River moves more than 10 percent of all wheat exported from the United States.
