Salmon Fishing at Buoy 10,
Area Near Bonneville Dam to Resume Thursday

by Bill Monroe
The Oregonian, September 13, 2022

Harvest 'Exploitation' rates of Snake River Fall Chinook, 1979-2018. (Source: NOAA Fisheries, 5-Year Status Review of Snake River Fall Chinook) Buoy 10 fishing for hatchery coho salmon will resume Thursday.

So, too, for either hatchery coho or any chinook in an area downriver from Bonneville Dam to the east end of Reeder Island, upriver a few miles from Washougal, for a two-adult salmon limit per day.

Oregon and Washington fish managers met by telephone Tuesday afternoon and reopened fishing in those two zones after an abrupt pre-Labor Day closure to protect downriver wild fall chinook below the dam.

The highly unpopular closure came on the threshold of a large expected coho run, which appears to be true, based on counts at the dam. Testimony during the call supported the expected staging at the river's mouth.

However, the states are bound by federal rules to protect wild fall chinook downriver regardless of other run excesses and regardless of coho numbers.

Thousands of anglers, customers of guides, and those in their own or friends' boats, moved upriver with the closure to fish for a fall chinook run now believed to be nearly twice its projection.

Many are expected to return to the limited fishing areas below the dam, including Astoria.

The states also approved some additional limited gill-net fishing for fall chinook from Warrior Rock on Sauvie Island upriver to Beacon Rock, below Bonneville Dam.
