Idaho Fish and Game Director, Rod Sando, Resigns by Pat McCoy Capital Press - January 18(?), 2002

BOISE -- Rod Sando, director of the Idaho Department of Fish and Game, announced this week he would submit his resignation Jan. 23 to the state Fish and Game Commission.

"Our philosophical differences have become impossible to overcome, and I think it is best for me and the department to move on," Sando wrote to department employees in an e-mail distributed Jan. 22.

Sando was credited with clearing up financial woes within the department and restoring staff morale. He also gained the respect of Idaho sporting groups.

But he ran afoul of industry groups, notably in recent months after a Mountain Home man was cited for illegally taking mountain lions that were threatening horses on a ranch.

The charges were dropped. Sando exchanged sharp letters with the Idaho Cattle Association and the Idaho Farm Bureau over the fact that the man was cited at all. State law allows livestock operators or their agents to take predators that are threatening their animals, without a permit.
