Tribal Employees Learning to Run Hatchery

by Associated Press
KTVB News, April 25, 2005

LEWISTON, Idaho -- Federal Fish and Wildlife Service employees at the National Fish Hatchery in Kooskia have started training Nez Perce tribal members to take over their jobs.

The switch is part of the huge water rights settlement reached last month between the state of Idaho and the tribe.

The deal gives the tribe control of the Kooskia hatchery on the Clearwater River and splits management between the tribe and the federal agency at another steelhead and salmon hatchery near Dworshak dam.

The federal employees displaced by the management changes can decide whether to transfer to another job, become tribal employees, or continue to work for the Fish and Wildlife Service at the hatcheries until 2010.

After that, their positions will be eliminated.
