Salem Electric Brings Good News, Lower Rates by Staff Keizer Times, December 26, 2008

It seems like the cost of everything is going up. But Salem Electric customers will get good news on their power bills soon: The cost is actually going down.

Salem Electric will lower its rates by 5 percent starting January 1, 200-9, with residential rates falling from $7.23 to $6.87 per kilowatt-hour (kWh), less than the national average of $10.33. The residential customer using 1,000 kWhs per year will see a reduction of $3.60 per month. Basic charge and street and area lighting charges will remain the same.

The rate reduction results from credits Salem Electric receives from power supplier Bonneville Power Administration and a reduction in capital needs. Policy changes have moved an increasing share of the cost for serving new developments to be borne by those involved in the projects.

"While most energy users across the country are experiencing dramatic rate increases, I am pleased on behalf of Salem Electric's Board of Directors to be able to announce a 5 percent reduction in power rates for our cooperative members," said Salem Electric Board President Joe Van Meter.

The co-op will receive a total of more than $3 million in credits from BPA. Members are encourage to participate in conservation programs as well as heating assistance available to members who meet income guidelines.

Bonneville Power Administration believes wholesale power rates will increase in late 2009.
