Salmon's Best Bet

by James Bradford
Spokesman Review, May 18, 2007

I strongly support the position taken by the Spokesman in its article today suggesting that saving salmon in this basin be studied and reported on by agencies capable of relatively unbiased efforts, namely the National Academy of Sciences and the Government Accountability Office ("Facts Over Furor," May 16).

There is need for urgency on this matter other than that Judge Redden may soon act for a couple of reasons. Firstly, wild salmon populations continue to decline and extinction looms ever closer. Secondly, as the U.S. Corps of Engineers' recent hearings suggest, siltation in the Lower Granite estuary increasingly puts Lewiston at risk of flooding and will require some form of remedial action. Clearly it is time to get this issue resolved by the agencies best able to do so accurately and without bias.
