Shippers to Receive Financial Help by Staff The Peak 104.1, January 4, 2011

BEND, OR -- Several Northwest shipping companies will receive money to help offset costs while two popular shipping routes are out of commission. Over the next three months, the Port of Portland plans to pay truck and rail costs for shipping while locks on the Columbia and Snake rivers are closed for repairs. Several companies have already signed up to take advantage of the $800,000 in subsidy money pledged by the Port. Under the program, shippers receive payment based on where the container ships from, regardless of size. Allowances range from $250 to $400 per container.

The navigation locks were taken out of commission on December 10th to replace aging gates. They are scheduled to reopen in March.
