Container Ship Will Skip Portland
as Longshore Slowdown takes Greater Toll

by Richard Read
The Oregonian, June 18, 2012

The Longshore and Warehouse Union said it is not working to slowdown work at the Port of Portland's Terminal 6. A cargo vessel will bypass Portland Wednesday, disrupting more freight and business across the Northwest as port unions continue squabbling over a couple of jobs.

Managers at Hapag-Lloyd, one of the world's largest steamship lines, told freight forwarders Monday not to expect the 38,000-ton Cape

Mayor in port this week. Instead the ship is expected to unload its Portland-bound containers in Oakland, Calif., where they'll be sent on by truck or rail.

Another Hapag-Lloyd ship departed Portland late after calling on the Port of Portland last week -- as did a vessel owned by the Hanjin shipping line, which left about 100 empty containers at the terminal Monday to avoid further delays, port managers said.
