PUC Renews Idaho Power-Simplot Deal

by Staff
Capital Press, April 23, 2013

POCATELLO, Idaho -- The Public Utilities Commission has approved a two-year renewal of a sales agreement between Idaho Power Co. and J.R. Simplot Co., which produces electricity with steam released as a byproduct at its Don fertilizer plant.

Simplot generates 10 average megawatts of power month through its co-generation facility. Under the Public Utility Regulatory Policies Act, utilities are required to buy power from projects of 10 average megawatts or smaller at a rate equal to the cost it would have had to pay to generate the power itself or buy from another source.

The avoided cost rate for 2013 is $52.28 per megawatt-hour.
