3 Smoke Injuries from
Cruise Ship Fire on Columbia River

by Associated Press
Montana's News Station, April 8, 2008

PORTLAND, Ore. - The Coast Guard says three members of a cruise ship that caught fire in the Columbia River have been treated for inhaling smoke.

Lt. Cmdr. Dave Smith in Portland says no passengers on board the paddlewheel Queen of the West were injured. Everyone got off this morning after it beached at Maryhill State Park near Goldendale.

He says a small number of the crew remain on board to take the ship to Klickitat where the damage from the engine room fire can be assessed. There was no spill or other pollution into the river.

There were 124 passengers and 53 crew members on board the 230-foot Seattle-based ship.

It sent a distress call to the Coast Guard about 12:30 this morning when it was near The Dalles, Oregon. A tug boat tied up its barges and took the ship to Maryhill.

The passengers and many crew members were taken by bus to a hotel in the area.
