Navigation Tonnage Summary by Commodity Army Corps of Engineers, Walla Walla District

Grain cargo is loaded on barges along the Columbia and Snake rivers typically to export from Oregon's Port of Portland.

• Twice the tonnage travels on the Columbia River versus the Snake River (McNary vs. other four).

Looking from Idaho on downstream:

• On average, the grain tonnage has doubled at Little Goose as compared to Lower Granite.
• On average, the grain tonnage has nearly tripled at Ice Harbor as compared to Lower Granite.
• A relative small amount of product moves upstream to Lewiston, Idaho; a bit over 100 tons of petroleum annually.

Navigation tonnages have dropped significantly in the Lower Snake River over the past decade.

About 38% at Lewiston/Clarkston/Wilma on Lower Granite Pool.
About 46% at Almota/Central Ferry/Lyons Ferry on Little Goose & Lower Monumental Pools.
About 16% at Windust/Sheffler on Ice Harbor Pool.

Moving freight by rail is about 10% higher in energy use than by water, not including lost power from lock flushes.
